Designated as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, the Cité de Carcassonne is a popular tourist destination. After Mont-Saint-Michel, it is France’s second most visited tourist site. The enormous, one-of-a-kind medieval site has been remarkably preserved. The city is protected by two fortifying walls and is home to a castle, the Château Comtal (Count’s Castle), and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire.

At the heart of Carcassonne, le château Comtal is actually a fortress. In the past, it would have been home to the viscounts of Carcassonne. Visitors can tour the castle throughout the year and, in so doing, access the city ramparts. Among other things, the castle houses a lapidary museum and a permanent exhibition depicting the Cité’s 19th Century restoration.

The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire is a gothic-style cathedral. One of the city’s greatest treasures, its sculpture decor and collection of stained-glass windows are among the finest in the South of France. Mass is held every Sunday morning.
Also known as the “lower town”, the Bastide Saint Louis now hosts a variety of businesses, residences, and pedestrian streets. The Bastide is Carcassonne’s commercial and residential centre.

The Memories of the Middle Ages museum tells the history of the medieval Cité through audio and visual exhibitions. Learn about period clothing, architecture, weaponry, and military assault and castle defence techniques.

Just a few minutes from the medieval city, Carcassonne’s “Parc Australien” teaches its visitors about Australia.  Enjoy a variety of craft and traditional painting exhibitions, and try your hand at playing an aborigine or a gold digger.

The Pont Vieux is a 225 metre bridge, the first to link the city with the old walled bastide. Today, the bridge is pedestrian only. It offers a beautiful view of the city ramparts and the Trivalle neighbourhood, which is located below the city.
